Najib launches ‘Maps of Malaya and Borneo: Discovery, Statehood and Progress’ book

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27– Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today launched a book on ‘Maps of Malaya and Borneo: Discovery, Statehood and Progress’, that showcases the extensive map collections of the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Datuk Richard Curtis.
Also present was the Regent of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah.  Najib, in his speech, said as Malaysia developed, it became important to see the progress both through “our own eyes” and the eyes of others.
“The Sultan of Selangor is already a well-known expert on the history of Malaysia with his superb library of books on the Malay World and his extensive collection of Malay cultural objects of all kinds,” he said.
Najib said it was important to ensure the documentation of “our past”,  whether such records were from local or foreign sources.
The book features more than 160 maps dating from the 1500s to after Malaysia’s formation in 1963 that were reproduced in full colour.
The collections include early Portuguese, Dutch, French and English maps, nautical charts, maps of the interior, maps from atlases and encyclopaedias, maps showing the economy, culture and communications, and urban maps.
Two editions of the book have been published, a standard edition priced at RM120 and a large deluxe edition priced at RM450, which are available at major bookstores.
Penang-born Curtis was raised and educated in Malaysia and the United Kingdom. He has been collecting maps and early prints of Malaya and Borneo for more than 30 years.
